NAF Orders Probe into Civilian Casualty Claims after Katsina Airstrike

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an urgent investigation into a devastating airstrike in Katsina State that tragically resulted in civilian deaths.

The airstrike, targeting suspected bandits, accidentally killed seven people, including six members of the same family, in the Yauni community of Zakka ward, Safana Local Government Area, on Saturday.

In response to the distressing incident, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has ordered a full inquiry to uncover the truth.

Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, NAF’s spokesperson, expressed deep concern over the allegations, stressing the Air Force’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

He assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly examined, clarifying that these claims remain unconfirmed until the investigation is concluded.

Akinboyewa emphasized the NAF’s adherence to strict engagement protocols, ensuring all operations are conducted with international standards to minimize harm to civilians.

He urged the public to remain patient as the investigation unfolds, pledging that the Air Force will take appropriate action based on the findings.

The airstrike was part of a mission aimed at countering a deadly bandit assault that earlier claimed the lives of two Police Mobile Force officers and four local vigilantes.

The bandits, reportedly hiding on Yauni Hill, had attacked security personnel before retreating to their stronghold, prompting the NAF to launch an air interdiction. While the operation neutralized several bandits, the tragic civilian casualties have raised critical concerns.

This incident follows a similar tragedy in Sokoto State two months ago, where 10 civilians lost their lives in a botched airstrike, underscoring the difficulties faced in targeting armed groups operating in northern Nigeria.

As the investigation progresses, the NAF is under increasing pressure to ensure accountability and prevent further tragic mistakes in future operations, with the public and military officials eagerly awaiting answers.
