NAFDAC seals Kaduna warehouse stocked with N75 million worth of expired products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed down a warehouse in Kaduna for storing expired food and cosmetic products valued at over N75 million. This action was taken following information provided by a concerned citizen.

NAFDAC disclosed the development on its official X handle on Tuesday, revealing that the warehouse was located at PP2A Bayajidda Street, near Kano Road, New Ogbomosho Road. During the raid, officials found workers repackaging expired biscuits and discovered other expired items, including dairy milk, vegetable oil, soft drinks, and detergents.

Additionally, the warehouse’s managing director has been arrested for questioning. NAFDAC stressed that strict regulatory sanctions will be enforced once the investigation is concluded.

Among the items seized were expired products worth over seven million naira, including “H-Pylori” test kits, which pose significant risks to public health.

Since November 26, 2024, NAFDAC has introduced guidelines for handling and disposing of unwholesome medicines and other NAFDAC-regulated products, such as food, medicines, medical devices, and cosmetics. The agency emphasized that no regulated product should be manufactured, imported, exported, sold, or used in Nigeria unless it is registered under NAFDAC regulations.

NAFDAC also defined “unwholesome” products as those that are expired, improperly sealed, damaged, poorly stored, mislabeled, counterfeit, substandard, prohibited, or unauthorized. It recommended that at the facility level, unwholesome products should be carefully managed, including maintaining an inventory book.

The agency urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious products or activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
