NAFDAC Staff Begin Indefinite Strike Over Welfare Issues

The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress, has initiated an indefinite strike affecting the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) over unresolved staff welfare concerns.

Key issues driving the strike include the review of 2024 promotion examination results, the appointment of directors for public affairs and special duties, the establishment of a training institute, and reforming the promotion examination content. Additional demands include the creation of a psychology officer cadre, payment of pending burial expenses, life insurance and repatriation allowances, as well as settling salary arrears for employees from 2022.

In a statement by Ejor Michael, the TUC secretary, it was revealed that the workers had previously issued a 14-day ultimatum to NAFDAC management, as communicated in a document dated September 20, 2024.

Following the expiration of this ultimatum, a congress of NAFDAC staff was convened on October 4, resulting in a unanimous decision to commence the strike on Monday, October 7, 2024.

The statement emphasized that the strike will persist until all demands outlined in the earlier communique are fully addressed. Staff have been instructed to remove personal belongings from their offices, as no one will be permitted entry into any NAFDAC premises during the strike.

“Your cooperation is greatly treasured to ensure the effectiveness of this indefinite nationwide strike action. We will not relent until all issues are satisfactorily addressed,” the statement concluded.
