The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the reported assault of a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) by a student over a TikTok video.
In a statement released in Ibadan, Oyo State, NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, reiterated the association’s dedication to advocating for students’ rights while also emphasizing the importance of discipline, respect for authority, and compliance with institutional rules.
Akinteye expressed that violence and misconduct should have no place in academic institutions, urging students to uphold respect for authority. “NANS has always championed students’ rights, academic freedom, and a conducive learning environment. However, we equally promote discipline and respect for institutional regulations. The reported assault on a UNIZIK lecturer over a TikTok recording is strongly condemned,” he stated.
He further clarified that such behavior is unacceptable, reminding that academic institutions thrive on mutual respect between students and lecturers. Akinteye added that while students have the right to free expression, including on social media, these rights must be exercised responsibly and respectfully.
“This incident is an embarrassment to the student body and does not reflect the values of the Nigerian student community,” he remarked.
Akinteye reaffirmed NANS’ commitment to protecting students’ rights and welfare, but emphasized that the association would not support students who break the law or disrespect lecturers. He stressed the need for responsible leadership and discipline among students and assured that NANS would continue to call out actions that undermine these principles.
The NANS President urged UNIZIK management to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, ensuring all involved parties are given a fair hearing. He called for appropriate sanctions if the student is found guilty, in line with the institution’s regulations, to serve as a deterrent for future misconduct.
Akinteye concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining a respectful and professional academic environment.
