The organized Labour in Nasarawa State has officially called off its indefinite strike following successful negotiations with the state government over the implementation of the new minimum wage.
The industrial action, which involved members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), began in protest of the state’s failure to implement the new minimum wage, despite a nationwide deadline set by the NLC for December 1.
On November 23, the NLC had warned that the deadline for all states to implement the new wage structure was non-negotiable. However, after extensive discussions and the intervention of key stakeholders, the workers in Nasarawa agreed to suspend the strike.
Ismaila Okoh, the NLC Chairman in Nasarawa, announced the development at a press conference in Lafia on Monday. He stated that the state government had agreed to make the necessary adjustments to the minimum wage, finalizing a template for the consequential adjustments for workers on Grade Levels 7 to 16.
Mohammed Doma, the TUC Chairman in the state, confirmed that the payment of the new minimum wage, including the agreed adjustments, would be backdated to December 1, ensuring that workers receive their full entitlements.
This resolution brings an end to the industrial action, with workers returning to their duties following the government’s commitment to the timely implementation of the wage adjustments.
