NASS intervention raised housing budget by N50bn – Minister

The National Assembly Committees have intervened to increase the Federal Government’s housing budget by an additional N50 billion.

This was announced by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, during his ministry’s 2025 Sector Retreat, held in Lagos on Wednesday. The retreat was themed, “Actualising The Renewed Hope Agenda For Housing And Urban Development: Examining Strategies, Identifying Opportunities to Boost Scale And Impact.”

Dangiwa emphasized that while the N50 billion increase is a positive step, the ministry had advocated for an additional N360 billion. This would help expand the coverage of the Renewed Hope Estates to 18 more states, broaden the urban renewal program to over 100 additional sites, and address outstanding liabilities, among other needs.

“The N50 billion is a good start. We will continue to engage with our National Assembly stakeholders, whom we hold in the highest regard, as well as the Budget Office. I have established a stakeholder management team, led by the Minister of State and the Permanent Secretary, to ensure we are proactive in involving critical stakeholders in all our activities,” Dangiwa said.

This announcement follows the minister’s earlier call for a higher budgetary allocation to meet the presidential mandate of providing affordable housing and addressing the country’s housing deficit.

For the 2025 fiscal year, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development allocated N11.5 billion to construct 20,000 housing units under the Renewed Hope Agenda’s housing scheme. This amount represents just over 10 percent of the ministry’s total budget of N98.1 billion.

Aminu Tambuwal, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, reaffirmed the commitment of lawmakers to support policies and legislative frameworks aimed at driving efficiency in the housing sector.
