NBS Reports N2.43 Trillion in Internally Generated Revenue for 2023

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced that the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) collectively generated N2.43 trillion in internally generated revenue (IGR) in 2023. This figure represents a significant increase of 26.5% compared to the N1.92 trillion recorded in 2022.

The IGR comprises revenues primarily from two categories: taxes and revenues from ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

Lagos State led the pack with an impressive N815.86 billion, accounting for 33.6% of the total IGR in 2023. This marks a 25% increase from the N651.15 billion generated in 2022. Following Lagos, the FCT generated N211.10 billion, Rivers State recorded N195.41 billion, Ogun State brought in N146.87 billion, and Delta State contributed N90.91 billion.

On the other end of the spectrum, Taraba State had the lowest IGR at N10.86 billion, followed by Yobe (N11.19 billion), Kebbi (N11.73 billion), and Gombe (N15.17 billion).

The NBS report also highlighted regional performance, with the South-West zone generating the highest revenue, totaling N1.1 trillion. This zone is primarily bolstered by Lagos, which alone accounted for 73% of the South-West’s IGR.

The South-South zone followed with N468.7 billion, while the North-Central recorded N387.6 billion, the North-West generated N206.2 billion, and the South-East contributed N142.9 billion. The North-East zone had the least IGR at N104.3 billion.

This report underscores the growing trend of increased revenue generation across Nigeria’s states, with significant variations in performance highlighting the economic disparities among different regions.
