NBS Reports Surge in Petrol Prices; Benue, Bauchi, and Gombe States Lead in Costs

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that Benue, Bauchi, and Gombe states recorded the highest prices for premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in August 2024.

According to the NBS’s latest report, the average petrol price reached N830.46 per litre, reflecting a significant increase of 32.51 percent from N626.70 in August 2023. When compared to July 2024, this figure rose by 7.78 percent from N770.54.

In a detailed state profile analysis, Benue State topped the list with an average retail price of N941.24 per litre, followed closely by Bauchi at N935.71 and Gombe at N925.00. Conversely, Delta, Cross River, and Edo states reported the lowest average retail prices at N667.50, N672, and N676.25, respectively.

Regionally, the North-East Zone had the highest average retail price at N908.21, while the South-South Zone recorded the lowest at N677.11.

On September 20, President Bola Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s daily petrol consumption has decreased to approximately 30 million litres following the removal of fuel subsidies. He acknowledged the ongoing “petroleum crisis” but emphasized the need for the country to achieve petrol security.
