NCDC Activates Emergency Centre as Cholera Death Toll Reaches 53 Nationwide

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has activated its emergency operations centre in response to a severe cholera outbreak that has resulted in 53 deaths across the country.

This development was confirmed in an update shared by the agency on its official X platform on Monday.

“Following a dynamic risk assessment of the #cholera epidemiological situation which placed the country at a very high risk of increased cholera transmission, we have activated the National #Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC),” the NCDC announced.

As of June 24, 2024, a total of 1,528 suspected cholera cases and 53 deaths have been reported across 31 states. This alarming situation has prompted intensified efforts to control the outbreak and prevent further spread.

In Ogun State, Health Commissioner Tomi Coker confirmed that one person has died and 25 cases of cholera have been identified. The casualty was reported in Ijebu North Local Government Area. Commissioner Coker, speaking in Abeokuta on Monday, noted that free surveillance and emergency treatment measures have been activated in all 20 local government areas of the state to tackle the outbreak.

The most affected areas in Ogun State include Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Obafemi/Owode, Ijebu North, Ado, and Odo/Ota local government areas. Efforts are being made to curb the spread of the disease in these regions through enhanced medical response and public health interventions.
