NCDC reports surge in Lassa Fever cases in Ondo, Edo states

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a rise in Lassa fever cases in week 39 of 2024, with nine new confirmed cases in Ondo and Edo states.

In its latest Lassa Fever Situation Report, the NCDC warned of the growing threat posed by the disease, noting, “Climate change is putting an estimated 700 million people globally at risk.”

Recognized by the World Health Organization as a potential cause of severe outbreaks, Lassa fever presents symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle pain, and in severe cases, facial swelling and bleeding. The report highlighted, “Survivors often face long-term complications, including deafness.”

According to the NCDC, the number of confirmed cases rose from four the previous week, bringing the total number of infections in 2024 to 1,018 across 28 states. So far, 172 deaths have been reported, with a slight rise in the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) to 16.9% compared to 16.8% in the same period last year.

Despite intensified efforts to contain the disease, the NCDC expressed concern over the rising number of deaths, saying, “The high Case Fatality Rate is largely due to late presentation of cases, poor health-seeking behaviors, and inadequate environmental sanitation in high-burden areas.” The agency added that limited access to treatment further hinders efforts to reduce fatalities.

The NCDC further emphasized that the National Lassa Fever Technical Working Group continues to coordinate response efforts, while partners are implementing interventions to combat the disease. Alerts have also been sent through the Nigeria Preparedness and Readiness Alert System (NPRAS) to reinforce ongoing measures.
