NCoS CG orders investigation, immediate re-arrrest of nine escapees

The Acting Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered the swift re-arrest of the remaining escapees from the Koton Karfe prison in Kogi State. Nwakuche issued the directive during an assessment visit to the correctional facility.

He also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape. It was previously reported that 12 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, and so far, five of them have been recaptured.

The jailbreak occurred in the early hours of Monday and resulted in the death of one correctional officer.

The inmates managed to manipulate the facility’s padlocks, facilitating their escape. Nwakuche acknowledged that the successful re-arrest of some escapees was the result of a coordinated effort by a team of operatives.

Additionally, Nwakuche has ordered a security audit across all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent similar incidents in the future.

He also urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any relevant information to help in the recapture of the remaining escapees.
