The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has reported that 22 bodies have been recovered following a boat mishap that occurred between Baro and Akwanu communities in the Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State. In addition, eight people have been rescued alive.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, it was revealed that the incident took place on Thursday night, November 28, 2024, at around 2:00 a.m.
The boat, which was traveling from Ebe Community in Kogi State, was carrying nearly 50 passengers on its way to Katcha market when the accident occurred.
Arah stated that NSEMA is currently overseeing and coordinating search and rescue efforts, working in collaboration with the Agaie Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and other community volunteers. Thanks to the swift response from these volunteers, 22 bodies have been recovered so far, and eight individuals have been rescued alive.
Of the 22 bodies recovered, 18 are from Kogi State, while four are from the Akwanu community in Agaie Local Government. The search and rescue operation is ongoing, with efforts continuing to locate additional survivors.
