Nigeria Allocates Over N38 Billion for Inmates’ Welfare and Correctional Facility Upgrades in 2025 Budget

The Nigerian Government has proposed a substantial N38,030,008,805 to fund the feeding of inmates across the country’s custodial centres for the year 2025. In addition to this allocation, the government has earmarked N7.2 billion for the much-needed upgrade of correctional facilities, addressing the challenges of frequent jailbreaks in recent years.

This funding is aimed at enhancing the deteriorating infrastructure of correctional centres and creating a safer, more conducive environment for both inmates and staff. The proposal includes several other allocations designed to improve the overall functioning and security of the prison system.

Key allocations in the 2025 budget include N1,716,640,500 for inmate uniforms and clothing, and N1,062,097,494 for medical supplies. These measures are aimed at addressing the basic needs of inmates while ensuring adequate healthcare provisions.

For increased security, N1,231,334,077 has been set aside for the purchase of security equipment for correctional officers. Another N2,280,609,699 will be used to procure vehicles to bolster logistics and enhance security operations.

In line with the government’s long-term plan to modernize the prison system and expand capacity, N563,390,773 has been allocated for the ongoing construction of a 3,000-capacity maximum-security prison in Abuja.

Additionally, the government has proposed N6,161,868 for the construction and provision of clinics in six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), aimed at improving healthcare services for both inmates and correctional staff.

The proposed budget was presented to the National Assembly last week by President Bola Tinubu for scrutiny and passage.
