Nigeria Customs Service Shuts Down 20 Fuel Stations in Crackdown on Petroleum Smuggling

In a decisive move to tackle the rising problem of petroleum smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA), has shut down 20 fuel stations across the country. These stations have been implicated in the diversion and smuggling of petroleum products out of Nigeria.

Assistant Controller General of Customs, Hussain Ejibunu, who is also the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, disclosed this development during a press briefing in Lagos. Ejibunu confirmed that the operation, aimed at curbing fuel smuggling, led to the closure of six stations in Lagos and ten stations along the Sokoto-Kebbi Express Road. Additionally, five stations have had their licenses revoked for their involvement in illicit activities.

Ejibunu further revealed that multiple arrests have been made, with the suspects now facing prosecution in various courts across the country. Operation Whirlwind has also led to the confiscation of several tankers involved in the smuggling of fuel. In total, 16 tankers were handed over to the NMDPRA in Adamawa, while others were seized in Kano, Kwara, and Lagos.

The Customs official also issued a stark warning to filling stations caught dispensing fuel into jerry cans for the purpose of smuggling. He emphasized that such stations would face immediate closure, and the products would be seized as evidence.

In response, NMDPRA spokesman, Ene Ita, confirmed the agency’s ongoing collaboration with the NCS to combat petroleum product diversion and smuggling. The partnership underscores the commitment of both agencies to tackle this persistent challenge and safeguard Nigeria’s petroleum resources.

The crackdown, part of the larger Operation Whirlwind, highlights the government’s resolve to clamp down on illegal activities that undermine the country’s economy and fuel distribution system.
