The Brazilian government has announced the official inclusion of Nigeria as a partner country in the BRICS bloc. This was confirmed in a statement released by Brazil’s Foreign Ministry on Friday.
According to the Brazilian government, Nigeria’s admission into BRICS is a reflection of shared interests between the country and the multinational group. Both Nigeria and BRICS actively work to strengthen cooperation among Global South nations and push for reforms in international organizations.
“Nigeria, with the world’s sixth-largest population and Africa’s largest, as well as being one of the continent’s leading economies, aligns with the core interests of BRICS. The country is a key player in promoting South-South cooperation and advocating for global governance reform—issues that are central to Brazil’s current BRICS presidency,” the statement noted.
Brazil assumed the presidency of BRICS on January 1, 2025, taking over from Russia.
Nigeria joins a growing list of partner countries that now includes Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. This partnership category was first established at the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.
