The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, has withdrawn its earlier invitation extended to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, over the tragic incident during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Kano on March 30, 2025. Initially, the Emir had been invited to provide details regarding the events surrounding the breakdown of law and order that occurred during the celebration.
However, the police announced on Sunday that the invitation was rescinded following advice from various stakeholders and the IGP’s commitment to ensuring that police actions are not misinterpreted or politicized. Instead, the Force Intelligence Department (FID) has been instructed to travel to Kano and obtain the Emir’s statement directly.
The tragic incident unfolded when the Emir, despite prior agreements to maintain peace, mounted a horse during the Sallah celebrations, which led to a violent confrontation with local youths. This clash resulted in the death of Usman Sagiru and left several others injured. The police had previously warned against such actions in an attempt to prevent violence between the disputed Emirs of Kano Ado Bayero and Lamido Sanusi. Both were planning separate Durbar Festivals, which were intended to be a peaceful public display but ultimately led to unrest.
The NPF stressed that its actions are rooted in neutrality, justice, and professionalism. The police also emphasized that all individuals found culpable would face justice, with several arrests already made in connection with the violence.
