Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to OACPS Partnerships at UN General Assembly

Nigeria has reiterated its dedication to strengthening international partnerships and enhancing relations with member states of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS).

Vice President Kashim Shettima made this commitment during a high-level OACPS meeting held on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Angola chaired the discussions.

In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication,  Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima emphasized the importance of solidarity among member states in addressing global challenges. He asserted Nigeria’s role as a principal partner of the OACPS, advocating for shared values such as democracy, diaspora engagement, and sustainable development. “Our presence at the UN General Assembly allows us to amplify these priorities on the global stage and explore avenues for deeper collaboration,” he stated.

During the meeting, Shettima addressed Nigeria’s recent designation as a high-risk jurisdiction for anti-money laundering, underscoring the country’s commitment to engaging in constructive dialogue with international partners. He also expressed Nigeria’s support for OACPS initiatives, particularly regarding the ongoing crisis in Haiti, commending Kenya’s contribution of 400 troops to the region. Highlighting Nigeria’s historical role in South-South cooperation, he noted, “Our technical aid corps programme, which has sent teachers and doctors to the Caribbean, exemplifies Nigeria’s commitment to uplifting fellow OACPS nations.”

The Vice President outlined Nigeria’s strategy to leverage its status as Africa’s most populous nation to advocate for OACPS interests and promote equitable treatment within international financial systems. He stated, “We’re representing Nigeria’s interests while also championing the collective voice of the OACPS. President Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria aligns closely with the OACPS agenda.”

Earlier in the meeting, OACPS Secretary-General Georges Chikoti praised Nigeria as a vital member state and a driving force within the organization. He expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s significant contributions and emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation with the European Union, focusing on collaborations in environmental sustainability, infrastructure, education, and business development.
