Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has announced plans to deepen economic relations with Belgium, particularly in the areas of agriculture and food security.
This move comes as both nations explore opportunities to enhance cooperation and foster mutual growth.
In a meeting with Belgian Ambassador Pieter Leenknegt in Abuja, Edun outlined the Nigerian government’s commitment to strengthening ties with Belgium, emphasizing the need to focus on agricultural development as a key avenue for economic advancement.
The minister noted that agriculture remains central to Nigeria’s economic agenda, especially given its critical role in ensuring food security and driving sustainable growth.
Edun also highlighted Nigeria’s improving economic trajectory, pointing to recent successes such as a reduction in inflation, stabilizing prices, and a notable increase in savings within the federation account.
These developments, he stated, reflect the government’s commitment to implementing macroeconomic reforms under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
While acknowledging the initial strain on the cost of living, Edun assured that these measures are already starting to bear fruit, positioning Nigeria for long-term stability.
Additionally, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s focus on supporting local farmers through favorable policies aimed at boosting agricultural productivity. This includes initiatives that encourage innovation and collaboration between the public and private sectors to enhance food security.
Ambassador Leenknegt echoed Belgium’s eagerness to strengthen economic relations, particularly in agricultural and trade sectors.
Both parties expressed their dedication to fostering ongoing cooperation, paving the way for a future marked by shared economic growth and prosperity.
This meeting represents a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Belgium, signaling a renewed commitment to exploring new avenues for collaboration and economic development.
As the two countries move forward with this partnership, the prospects for enhanced agricultural productivity and food security look promising for both nations.
