The Nigerian Government has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) to Yakubu Gowon University.
Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, revealed the decision to State House correspondents on Monday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu on Monday.
The renaming was in honour of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
Idris stated that the proposal will be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval.
Also speaking on the renaming of the University, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa stated that the council approved
The change of the University’s name following the motion moved by the President during the Monday council meeting.
The Minister of Education further revealed that following the approval of the council on the renaming of the University, the Federal Ministry of Education will proceed to prepare the necessary documents to change the act of the University.
Alausa further lauded President Tinubu’s efforts in increasing budgetary allocation to human capital development for the expansion of the sector.
He hinted that the President approved significant budgetary allocations to the education sector.
