Nigerian Government to Increase Telecom Tariffs, But Not by 100% as Requested

The Nigerian Government has confirmed that telecoms tariffs will be adjusted, but assured Nigerians that the increase will not be as steep as the 100% hike requested by telecom operators. The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, revealed this at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

Tijani explained that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will outline the specific details and modalities for the tariff adjustment within the telecoms sector. He emphasized that the government’s decision would consider the broader implications for Nigeria’s development.

“We have examined various factors to ensure that we contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s growth. These include enforcing the Executive Order to protect telecom infrastructure, promoting local content, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of telecom companies. It’s crucial that these companies remain viable, especially given the global inflationary pressures. We want them to continue supporting the economy without risking their collapse,” Tijani said.

He also acknowledged that many telecom companies have been pressing for a 100% tariff increase due to economic challenges. However, the Minister made it clear that the government is not in a position to approve such an increase at this time.
