Nigerian police launch school protection squad in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command launched a School Protection Squad on Wednesday, September 4, in preparation for the resumption of schools to prevent attacks on both private and public schools in the six area councils of Abuja.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, revealed this during the opening of the Police Strategic Stakeholders Forum on School Security and the training of the Schools Protection Squad at the Nigeria Police Resource Centre in Abuja.

The theme of the event is ‘Strengthening security resilience and integration of host communities in the protection of education’.

According to him, “The command has mapped out all schools in the Territory to ensure their adequate safety and protection, and the command has not recorded any attack on schools and noted that the command is committed to sustaining efforts towards the safety of the schools especially in the rural areas.”

“Security and safety of students and teachers have gained significant attention from government at all levels, following incessant attacks on schools which have created panic in the minds of teachers, students and parents, the act thereby led to the closure of schools”, he said.

Igweh reassured residents of Abuja of police readiness to protect students and make schools in the FCT safe.
