Nigerians criticise my fashion choices due to my age – Tiwa Savage
Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about the constant backlash she faces due to her fashion choices.
In a recent episode of the Receipts podcast, the 44-year-old single mother expressed her frustration with the criticism she receives, particularly because of her age.
Savage pointed out the double standard, highlighting that while other female celebrities in their 40s, like American singer Beyoncé, are celebrated for their beauty and confidence when wearing revealing outfits, she often faces age-shaming from Nigerians.
“They age-shame me every single day,” Savage said. “They ask, how can a woman of your age wear a bikini? Well, I can because I have the body for it.” She compared the treatment she receives to that of Beyoncé, who is praised in the U.S. for looking great in her 40s, with people admiring how “black don’t crack.” In contrast, she feels Nigerians criticize her, often saying things like, “When your son grows up, he’s going to see this.”
Savage countered, saying, “My son is going to see a powerful, beautiful woman and be proud of me.”
