The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently investigate allegations of adulterated petrol being imported into Nigeria. Over the past few weeks, reports have surfaced claiming that some petrol marketers are bringing in substandard fuel.
On November 3, Dangote Petroleum Refinery raised concerns, stating that any oil marketer selling petrol below the refinery’s price is likely importing inferior products.
This statement came after some marketers claimed that Dangote’s refined fuel was priced higher than imported petrol.
On November 7, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited responded to allegations, denying that adulterated petrol was sold to a customer at one of its retail outlets in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Solomon Ola, president of ANPE, urged President Tinubu to investigate the claims without delay, warning that such activities could have serious consequences for Nigeria’s economy. “The importation of tainted petrol into Nigeria could also strain diplomatic relations, especially considering the sanctions imposed by the European Union, United States, G7, and Australia on Russian-sourced crude and petroleum products,” the statement read.
Ola further emphasized that substandard petroleum products are not permitted in other African countries and should not be allowed into Nigeria either.
