Officials from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Jordan, which oversees Iraq, have successfully intervened to facilitate the return of Eniola Isaac, a 28-year-old Nigerian woman trafficked to Iraq under false pretenses.
Isaac, who had been promised a better life abroad, was subjected to severe abuse, physical assault, and mistreatment by her employer upon arrival in Iraq. Desperate for help, she pleaded with Nigerian authorities for assistance in returning home.
In an update released on Thursday via the official NiDCOM Twitter account (X.com), the commission confirmed that Isaac was expected to return to Nigeria on January 3, 2025, thanks to the intervention of the Nigerian mission in Jordan.
NiDCOM’s statement highlighted the growing concern over the trafficking of Nigerians to Iraq through deceptive promises, a practice that has been causing significant alarm. The commission also mentioned that another Nigerian, who had gone to Iraq for work as a carer, was found dead under suspicious circumstances. The Nigerian government has called for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The commission issued a warning about unscrupulous agents who continue to lure young Nigerian women to Iraq with fraudulent offers, which often lead to situations of forced labor, exploitation, and even prostitution. NiDCOM urged caution and emphasized the dangers that many unsuspecting victims face when falling prey to these deceitful schemes.
