Nigeria’s Airfare rises by 25.51% to N123,000 per domestic trip

The average cost of domestic airfare in Nigeria has seen a significant rise, climbing by 25.51% month-on-month to reach N123,700 in August 2024, up from N98,561 in July.

This increase is highlighted in the latest Transport Fare Watch released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday.

On a year-on-year basis, the airfare has skyrocketed by 56.56%, compared to N79,011.38 in August 2023. The data indicates that Niger State currently faces the highest air transport charges, with fares averaging N129,575.21, closely followed by the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, at N129,442.67.

In contrast, Zamfara State offers the lowest fare, with tickets priced at N102,665.89, while Cross River State follows with an average fare of N120,088.93.

This surge in airfare coincides with rising costs in other transportation sectors, including road, water, and rail, largely attributed to increasing energy prices.

As the economic landscape continues to evolve, the rising cost of domestic travel poses a significant challenge for many Nigerians.
