Nigeria’s total import from Malta has reached N766.81 billion in the third quarter of 2024, according to the latest foreign trade statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
While the specific products imported from Malta were not disclosed, earlier controversies surrounded the sudden rise in imports from the small Southern European country.
Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Industries Limited, had accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in relation to this increase.
Notably, there were no records of imports from Malta in the first and second quarters of 2024.
However, by the third quarter, imports from Malta represented 5.23% of Nigeria’s total imports, which amounted to N14.67 trillion. In this period, Malta ranked as Nigeria’s fifth-largest import trading partner, according to the NBS.
