Nigeria’s Relay Teams Set Sights on Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification

Team Nigeria is poised to kickstart their journey towards securing berths in all five relay events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as they participate in the World Athletics Relays commencing today in Nassau.

This prestigious two-day global event will witness the participation of 893 athletes representing 54 countries, all vying for coveted slots in the centenary games.

With confirmation from World Athletics, the top 14 teams in each event at the World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24 will automatically qualify for places at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Additionally, the remaining two spots in each discipline will be determined based on top lists during the qualification period spanning from December 31, 2022, to June 30, 2024.

Currently ranked second in Africa, trailing behind Kenya, and standing as the 16th best globally, Team Nigeria enters the competition on the back of notable achievements at the World Relays.

Securing gold in the 4x100m, bronze in the 4x400m, and achieving commendable finishes across various events, Nigeria amassed a total of 29 points, solidifying their presence on the international stage.

The 29-strong Nigerian athletics contingent features renowned names such as world record holder Tobi Amusan, alongside rising stars like Favour Ofili and Rosemary Chukwuma.

Notably, Favour Ashe’s absence from the men’s 4x100m team, possibly due to academic commitments, places the onus on Oghenebrume and Onwuzurike to lead the charge.

The primary objective for Team Nigeria remains securing top-14 finishes across relay events to ensure Olympic qualification.

Led by Chidi Okezie in the men’s 4x400m and Omolara Ogunmakinju in the women’s team, Nigeria aims to capitalize on their past successes and exhibit a blend of seasoned expertise and emerging talent.
