NiMet Alerts 19 States on Impending Heat Stress, Urges Urgent Safety Measures

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning to residents in 19 states, including those in the South-East and coastal regions, about an impending heat stress event that could lead to significant discomfort and health risks over the coming days.

According to NiMet, the most affected regions will include the North-Central and Eastern states, specifically Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The agency also highlighted vulnerable areas in the South-West, coastal zones, as well as parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto.

The alert, issued on Tuesday, warns that the combination of rising temperatures and high humidity over the next three to four days may lead to thermal discomfort across these regions. NiMet emphasized the potential health risks that could accompany this heat stress, including fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, impaired motor skills, and a general reduction in productivity.

In light of this, the agency strongly advises residents in these areas to take immediate safety measures, such as staying cool by using fans, air conditioning, or seeking shade. Light, breathable clothing is recommended, alongside regular hydration by drinking plenty of water.

NiMet also cautioned the public to avoid the peak heat hours between 12 PM and 3 PM and to protect themselves from the sun with hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

The agency urged the public to remain vigilant, adopt preventive measures, and prioritize health and well-being during this heat event.
