NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms and Potential Flooding Across Nigeria This Weekend

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thundery weather conditions nationwide from Thursday to Saturday, with a likelihood of urban flooding in major cities due to heavy downpours.

In its weather outlook released on Wednesday, NiMet forecasted morning thunderstorms in the northern region on Thursday, specifically over Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna states. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected in parts of Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, and more.

In the North Central region, morning thunderstorms are anticipated over the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, and Benue States, with increased thunderstorm activity expected throughout the day.

The southern region will also experience morning thunderstorms, particularly in Ebonyi and Enugu States, followed by widespread thunderstorms later in the day.

On Friday, the northern region will see morning thunderstorms in Taraba, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms affecting Kaduna, Kebbi, and Adamawa. The North Central area is forecasted to experience similar conditions, with thunderstorms anticipated over the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, and Nasarawa States.

Saturday’s forecast predicts morning thunderstorms in Taraba and Adamawa, with later thunderstorms affecting Kaduna, Katsina, and Kano States. The North Central region is expected to see thunderstorms in the morning and later in Plateau and Nasarawa.

NiMet warns residents of a high likelihood of urban flooding and advises them to steer clear of flood-prone areas. Strong winds may precede the rain in some areas, and the agency urges the public to follow safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.

Airline operators are also advised to stay updated with NiMet’s weather reports and forecasts to ensure effective planning.
