NLC to Hold Peaceful May Day Rally in Rivers, Demands Return to Democracy

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its Rivers State Council to stage a peaceful rally on May 1, 2025, to mark Workers’ Day with a strong call for the restoration of democratic governance in the state.

In a letter dated April 22 and signed by Deputy General Secretary Comrade Ismail Bello, the NLC urged all affiliate unions to participate in the rally, which will take place within the council’s premises.

The Congress said the event should be a moment of sober reflection, not celebration, due to the “subversion of democratic governance” in Rivers State.

This year’s Workers’ Day, themed “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” will be observed nationwide.

However, the NLC said Rivers requires special attention, calling for civic leadership renewal and stronger protection of workers’ rights.

The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to democratic values and urged members to use the May Day rally to amplify the people’s demand for freedom, dignity, and accountable leadership.
