The President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA) in the FCT, Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe has shared that Nnamdi Kanu is optimistic about securing his release from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody by April 2025.
After a recent visit to Kanu at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, Ezenekwe issued a statement detailing Kanu’s feelings. Despite his ongoing detention, Kanu expressed frustration over the lack of strong Igbo leadership and called for renewed efforts to advocate for the region’s interests.
Ezenekwe noted that Kanu appeared healthy, had gained weight, and remained in good spirits. He also reaffirmed his confidence in his legal team and maintained hope that the courts would grant him freedom soon.
However, Kanu voiced concern over the deteriorating conditions of the Igbo people in Nigeria, lamenting the absence of prominent voices to defend their cause. He also highlighted the historical neglect of Igbo freedom fighters, referencing Ralph Uwazurike, who Kanu claimed was abandoned by his people despite his good intentions during imprisonment. Kanu warned that such neglect could undermine the struggle for self-determination.
Ezenekwe further appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to take action in securing Kanu’s release. He reminded the president of his past contributions to the pro-democracy movement and called on him to show the political will to address the situation.
According to Ezenekwe, Kanu’s continued detention is a symbol of political repression rather than justice.
