The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has strongly denied recent claims that it imported over 200 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in February 2025.
The company described the allegation as “completely false, baseless, and a reckless misrepresentation of facts.”
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, NNPC Limited attributed the report to “lazy and unprofessional journalism” or a “deliberate, sponsored attempt by economic saboteurs to mislead the public.”
“NNPC Limited has not imported a single litre of PMS in 2025,” the statement clarified. “We do not control the import activities of private marketers nor issue import licenses. Attributing all PMS imports to NNPC is misleading, deceptive, and an example of irresponsible journalism that disregards basic fact-checking principles.”
While the company has not engaged in PMS imports this year, it emphasized that there is no legal barrier to doing so if necessary. “As Nigeria’s leading energy company, we have a duty to ensure energy security. Should any supply shortages arise, NNPC Limited reserves the right and responsibility to import in order to stabilize the market.”
NNPC Limited condemned the spread of such misinformation, noting that it distorts market realities, misleads stakeholders, and undermines the public interest.
The company warned that it will take legal action against those responsible for fabricating and disseminating false reports about its operations.
“We will not tolerate the spread of false and malicious reports aimed at undermining our reputation,” the statement stressed. It also urged media practitioners to prioritize accuracy and adhere to established fact-checking standards when reporting on sensitive industry matters.
