The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has taken a firm stand against the Senator representing Kano South Senatorial district Kawu Sumaila, by suspending him for alleged involvement in anti-party activities. Along with Sumaila, three other prominent members Ali Madakin Gini, Sani Abdullahi Rogo, and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum have also been suspended by the party.
The suspension was officially announced by the NNPP leadership in Kano State, with the state party chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, addressing the media at a press conference. Dungurawa accused the suspended members of violating the party’s core principles and engaging in actions that ran contrary to its ideological stance.
“These individuals were elected to the National Assembly on the NNPP platform, yet they have chosen to act in a manner that betrays the trust placed in them by both the party and their constituents,” Dungurawa said. “Their actions are a clear contradiction of the party’s values, and we have been left with no choice but to take this disciplinary action.”
The suspension of Senator Kawu was particularly criticized by Dungurawa, who pointed to the senator’s alleged disloyalty. The party had given him and others the benefit of support during the last election cycle, including complimentary tickets. Dungurawa expressed disappointment over Sumaila’s decision to associate with figures from the opposition, specifically focusing on his invitation to key members of the APC, including Abdullahi Ganduje, at his daughter’s wedding.
The NNPP chairman also referenced Sumaila’s involvement in the commissioning of certain projects in Sumaila Local Government Area, further reinforcing the notion that the senator’s political loyalty had shifted toward the APC.
“Despite the support we provided him, Senator Kawu’s actions speak otherwise. Inviting APC leaders to such personal events and his interactions with them signal where his true allegiance lies,” Dungurawa remarked.
However, Dungurawa did leave the door open for reconciliation. He stated that if the suspended members showed genuine remorse and sought to correct their actions, the party would consider reinstating them.
“If they acknowledge their mistakes and return with sincere contrition, we will be open to reconsidering our decision,” he added.
At the time of reporting, Senator Kawu Sumaila and the other suspended members had not issued any public response regarding the suspension or the party’s allegations.
