No suspension for Bayern’s Mazraoui over pro-Palestinian posts

Bayern Munich on Friday said defender Noussair Mazraoui would not be suspended, after a probe into the Moroccan player over his social media posts on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In the wake of the deadly attack on Israel by Hamas gunmen, Mazraoui had put up several pro-Palestinian posts, including one that called for “victory” for “our oppressed brothers in Palestine”.

The Bundesliga champions “held a detailed and clarifying” meeting with the 25-year-old Morocco international this week following his post about the conflict in Israel and Gaza.

“Noussair Mazraoui has credibly assured us that as a peace-loving person he resolutely rejects terror and war,” said Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen.

“He never meant to cause any irritation with his posts.”

Strikes by the Israeli military have reportedly killed more than 3,000 people in Gaza in the past fortnight, following an attack carried out by militant group Hamas on 7 October which killed 1,400 people in Israel.

“FC Bayern condemns Hamas’ attack on Israel,” said Dreesen.

In a statement, Bayern added that Mazraoui declared: “I condemn all terrorism and terrorist organisations.”

The Bundesliga champions said Mazraoui would remain in their squad but was currently sidelined by injury.

Earlier this week, German club Mainz suspended Dutch winger Anwar El Ghazi from training and matches over a social media post about the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The 28-year-old has since deleted the post, which his club felt was “unacceptable”.

Elsewhere, Nice defender Youcef Atal is being investigated by prosecutors in France after allegedly posting an anti-Semitic video on social media related to the conflict.
