Northern Elders Forum cautions Kano governor over scrapping of Emirates

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed concern over the unfolding Kano State emirate crisis that led to the removal of the five first class emirs in the state.

The forum’s spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in a statement on Friday, cautioned Governor Abba Yusuf and politicians involved to exercise restraint to avoid violence while trying to settle political scores.

Governor Yusuf, on Thursday, reinstated Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano, four years after he was deposed after signing the bill repealing the State Emirate Council Law 2019 that gave the state five emirate councils.

On Thursday, the state House of Assembly passed the bill for the dissolution of the four additional emirates created by the immediate past administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and the removal of all five emirs.

However, the Northern Elders Forum says it is extremely worried and profoundly agitated by the recent events in Kano, where emirates have been multiplied and traditional rulers have been dethroned and replaced, saying it is a clear example of the struggles faced by traditional rulers in the country.
