Northern governors have raised alarms over the prolonged blackout affecting their region, calling on the Nigerian Government to accelerate efforts for power restoration.
In a meeting held in Kaduna with traditional rulers and other key stakeholders, the Northern Governors’ Forum issued a strong statement, highlighting the urgent need to address the widespread power outage resulting from the vandalism of electricity transmission infrastructure.
“The Forum urges the Nigerian Government and relevant agencies to take immediate action to resolve the electricity crisis that has left many Northern States in darkness due to targeted attacks on transmission lines,” the governors said in a communique.
They underscored the vulnerability of critical infrastructure, advocating for the construction of additional transmission lines and diversification of energy sources to enhance the region’s energy resilience.
The ongoing vandalism has severely impacted businesses, leading to significant economic losses and paralyzing activities in various localities.
In response to the situation, President Bola Tinubu has directed Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu and other relevant authorities to expedite the restoration process. He also instructed National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to collaborate with military forces to ensure the safety of engineers tasked with repairing the damaged infrastructure. The president emphasized that Nigeria will no longer tolerate acts of sabotage against public utilities.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reassured the public that it is diligently working to restore power, despite facing security challenges. General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed their commitment to restoring bulk power supply as swiftly as possible.
