NPHCDA Urges Religious Leaders to Advocate for Vaccination and Maternal Health

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has called on religious leaders to renew their commitment to promoting vaccination, as well as maternal and child health within their communities. The agency emphasized that religious leaders hold the power to dispel myths, correct misinformation, and encourage positive health-seeking behaviors among their congregations.

In his remarks at a two-day engagement meeting in Abuja focused on vaccination and maternal and child health, NPHCDA Executive Director Muyi Aina highlighted the vital role of religious leaders as advocates for the well-being of their followers. He stated, “Your influence on parents can mean the difference between a child dying from preventable diseases and one who survives because they received the necessary vaccinations.”

Aina underscored the connection between a nation’s health and the health of its women and children, noting that a healthy mother fosters a healthy family, and a healthy child is crucial for a prosperous future. However, he pointed out that in many parts of Northern Nigeria, especially in rural and underserved areas, access to essential maternal and child health services remains a significant challenge. “Too many women continue to die from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, and far too many children do not reach their fifth birthday due to preventable diseases,” he said.

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Royal Eminence Saad Abubakar, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the importance of collective action to address Nigeria’s challenges. He urged religious leaders to collaborate in promoting development, peace, and security, recognizing that these issues extend beyond religious divides.

“The Sultan Foundation exemplifies the power of collaboration,” he remarked. “Established to foster sustainable development and social cohesion, the foundation has made significant progress in health, education, and economic empowerment through partnerships with organizations like UNICEF and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.”

The Sultan stressed that health and security are fundamental to Nigeria’s development, asserting that without good health, individuals cannot contribute meaningfully to society, and without security, economic growth is unattainable.

He also highlighted the success of vaccination campaigns, citing the eradication of polio in Nigeria as a testament to the effectiveness of collaborative efforts.
