NSIB Launches Investigation into FlyBird HS 125 Aircraft Incident

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into a serious incident involving a FlyBird HS 125 aircraft, with registration number 5NKAL.

The incident occurred on December 6, 2024, as the aircraft, en route from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to Kotoka International Airport, Accra, experienced significant technical difficulties during its flight.

According to Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, the aircraft lost both of its engines while in flight, prompting the crew to return to Abuja. The flight, with four people on board, was initially climbing through flight level 240 towards flight level 280 when the crew reported an issue with engine number 2.

The aircraft was approximately 25 nautical miles southwest of the VOR station VONUK at 17:54 UTC when the crew requested to divert back to Abuja due to the engine malfunction. Preliminary investigations by NSIB revealed that the aircraft lost engine No. 2 at flight level 230.

As the aircraft descended towards Abuja, the crew declared a Mayday emergency at around 5,000 feet, reporting the loss of engine No. 1. Despite the critical situation, the crew managed to safely land the aircraft at 18:16 UTC.

In its statement, NSIB confirmed that a “Go Team” has been deployed to gather evidence, conduct interviews, and review the aircraft’s flight data and maintenance records to determine the underlying causes of the incident. The investigation is aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future and enhancing overall aviation safety.

Further updates on the investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.
