NUT Suspends Strike in Four Ebonyi LGAs, Cites Positive Response from Authorities

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ebonyi State, has announced the suspension of its strike action in four out of the seven local government areas (LGAs) where it had declared an indefinite strike due to concerns over teachers’ welfare.

The strike has been called off in Edda, Ebonyi, Ishielu, and Ezza North LGAs, following positive responses and cooperation from local government authorities in these regions.

In a statement, NUT State Secretary Bassey Asuquo attributed the decision to the efforts of the local governments, which had complied with the Union’s demands for improved conditions for teachers and better educational opportunities for children. He emphasized that the suspension only applies to these four LGAs, while the strike would continue in Ivo, Ezza South, and Ohaukwu due to the non-compliance of their respective authorities.

The statement read: “The Union expresses its sincere gratitude to His Excellency, Rtd. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, Governor of Ebonyi State, for his recent intervention in the ongoing strike action. His proactive measures and demonstrated political will in addressing the welfare of workers and improving the education of underserved children in the state are highly commendable.”

NUT further acknowledged the positive cooperation of the local government chairmen, particularly for their efforts in ensuring better educational outcomes in underserved communities. The Union also expressed its appreciation to teachers for their steadfast support during the strike.

“The State Leadership extends heartfelt thanks to all its members for their continued support and solidarity in this struggle. Their unwavering commitment has been pivotal in our efforts to secure improvements in the education sector,” the statement continued.

The Union urged its members to remain resolute as they continue to advocate for better working conditions and educational standards, while monitoring developments in the remaining LGAs.
