Oba Abimbola Owoade has officially been crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.
The new monarch received the staff of office in a ceremony earlier this year, officiated by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in January.
The coronation ceremony took place today (Saturday) at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo, where Governor Makinde was joined by a distinguished gathering of dignitaries, including several prominent figures from across Nigeria.
Among the attendees were the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and Aare Oona Kankanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams, among others.
The coronation marks the commencement of a new chapter for the revered Alaafin stool and signals a fresh era for the people of Oyo, the state, and the wider Yoruba community, both in Nigeria and abroad.
