Ogun Bans Market Levies, to Reintroduce Bulk Purchase System

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced plans to introduce a price control mechanism and reinstate bulk purchasing of food items in the state. During a meeting with market leaders, including Iyaloja General Yemisi Abass, at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the Governor outlined several key changes.

Governor Abiodun revealed that all market levies would be suspended, with only development and environmental levies remaining. These are intended for market development within the state. He also introduced the Gateway Trading Company, formerly known as the Bulk Purchasing Company, which will begin operations across the state’s four zones to help lower food prices.

In addition, a ban on all forms of market levies was announced. A new market enforcement task force will be established, with a central body overseeing operations in all twenty local government areas. This task force will work to eliminate coercion and intimidation by individuals who do not contribute to market activities. Governor Abiodun emphasized that those caught collecting illegal fees would face legal consequences, and efforts would be made to address exorbitant shop and stall rents.

The Governor also promised support for farmers through grants, loans, and farm implements, and mentioned plans to offer low-interest loans to market vendors as part of the Ogun Empowerment Scheme, which is being finalized by the Ministries of Industry, Trade and Investment, and Women Affairs. This scheme aims to provide single-digit loans or grants, particularly for those in the informal sector.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Environment, Ogun State Waste Management Agency, and the Ministry of Women Affairs will collaborate to manage waste in markets effectively. The agencies are tasked with ensuring that dumpsters are available and regularly emptied.

In response, Yemisi Abass, the President of Market Women and Men in the State and Iyaloja of Yewaland, praised Governor Abiodun for engaging with market leaders to improve conditions for the state’s residents.
