Former Senator Monday Okpebholo, now Governor of Edo State, delivered an emotional farewell speech to the Senate on Wednesday, following the declaration of his seat as vacant by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The Senate President also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election to fill the vacant seat.
Okpebholo, who represented Edo Central Senatorial District before his election as governor, reflected on his time in the 10th Senate during his valedictory address. He expressed deep appreciation for the strong and supportive relationships he shared with his colleagues.
“Distinguished colleagues, this is a very emotional moment for me. From the moment I joined the 10th Senate in June 2023, every experience here has been incredibly memorable,” Okpebholo began. “We saw ourselves as pioneers of democracy, united in our desire for the best for our nation. Just one year into my Senate journey, I left to pursue my dream of becoming Governor. And today, I stand as the Governor of Edo State.”
He acknowledged that his journey would not be complete without the support of his fellow senators. “The encouragement, advice, and prayers I received here were invaluable,” he said.
Okpebholo expressed particular gratitude to Senate President Godswill Akpabio. “Let me particularly thank the exceptional Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCFR, for his unwavering support and encouragement throughout my campaign. His assistance was truly remarkable.”
He also thanked Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, Senate Majority Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and other principal officers for their guidance. “To my dear colleagues in the 10th Senate, you are like family to me,” he added. “The warmth and camaraderie in this chamber are unparalleled.”
Reflecting on his new role as Governor, Okpebholo assured his colleagues that the memories of the Senate would stay with him. “Even as Governor, I will remain an ambassador for the Senate as I continue to serve the people of Edo State,” he said. “My experience in legislation has only fueled my passion for good governance, especially in areas like infrastructure, security, education, and healthcare.”
He closed by expressing gratitude to close friends in the Senate, including Senators Kaka Shehu Lawan, Babangida Husseini Uba, and Abdulaziz Yari. “Thank you for your unwavering support during my campaign,” he said, before concluding with a heartfelt, “To all of you, I say Obilu!”
