The International Press Centre (IPC), through its Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) hub, has called on journalists and media practitioners covering the upcoming Ondo State governorship election to strictly adhere to professional ethics and prioritize their safety.
In a statement released on Friday, IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade highlighted the vital role the media plays in the electoral process and expressed concerns about the safety of journalists in the field.
“Although this is an off-cycle election, it still falls under the purview of media electoral responsibility. For candidates and their supporters, it is as significant as any other election. The atmosphere in Ondo State will reflect the usual dynamics associated with elections,” Arogundade said.
He urged journalists to maintain high ethical standards while covering the election and to remain vigilant about their personal safety. “It is crucial to avoid situations that could put journalists at risk,” he added.
Arogundade also reminded journalists of the importance of maintaining neutrality during the election. He stressed that partisanship is not limited to party membership but extends to avoiding any expressions, statements, symbols, or colors that may associate them with a particular political party or candidate.
The IPC director advised journalists to ensure they are properly equipped and accredited for election duties, which are scheduled for Saturday. He also cautioned against unauthorized entry into polling units by journalists who are not on duty.
While urging security agencies to perform their roles in a professional and civil manner, Arogundade reiterated that the media is a crucial partner in ensuring credible elections. Journalists should be afforded the rights and protections necessary to carry out their responsibilities effectively, he said.
