Ondo State Governor Grants Mercy to 117 Convicts

In a significant act of compassion, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has granted mercy to 117 convicts currently serving prison terms in the state.

This initiative, based on recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, reflects a commitment to rehabilitation and second chances within the justice system.

Among those benefiting, 19 convicts will be released outright, while others will see their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Additionally, several inmates will have their sentences reduced, fostering renewed hope for reintegration into society.

The formal announcement was made by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olukayode Ajulo, who also chairs the Advisory Council. The governor signed the release orders on September 27, 2024, with changes effective from October 1, coinciding with Nigeria’s 64th Independence celebrations.

Ajulo noted that the governor’s actions comply with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution. Each application was meticulously assessed, considering various factors such as the nature of the offenses, length of incarceration, age, health, and inmate behavior.

This compassionate gesture highlights Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to decongest correctional facilities and is a vital part of ongoing Justice Sector Reforms.
