A Philippine-flagged cargo ship sank near an island in the central Philippines, resulting in one fatality and two crew members reported missing, the coast guard said on Tuesday.
The vessel, Jerlyn Kathness, was overwhelmed by large waves in the San Bernardino Strait near Samar Island on Monday.
According to coast guard station commander Bryhl Amay, passing ships managed to rescue 11 of the 15 crew members during the night.
After spending over 25 hours in the water, another crew member swam ashore to the small island of San Juan early Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, fishermen recovered the body of a crew member near Biri Island, Amay added.
A search operation for the two missing crew members was ongoing as of Tuesday.
The ship was transporting 24 tons of cement from Cebu to Samar at the time of the incident.
Amay noted that further details about the vessel, described by a tracking website as a 199-ton general cargo ship built in 1993, were not immediately available.
