The Benue State Police Command has announced that it neutralized 12 bandits who had been terrorizing the Buruku Local Government Area of the state. The command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Sewuese Anene, made the announcement in a statement on Thursday in Makurdi.
Anene stated that the operation resulted in the tragic loss of one police officer, Insp. Terfa Anyiatse, who was killed during an exchange of gunfire with the bandits.
According to the PPRO, the Police Commissioner, Steve Yabanet, had ordered tactical commanders and divisional police officers to intensify efforts against criminals in the state on March 6, following reports of a regrouping of criminal gangs. This directive led to the launch of the Operation Zenda Joint Taskforce, which began conducting raids across the state.
On March 19, while some operatives were en route to a criminal hideout at Agwabi in Tombo Ward, Buruku LGA, they encountered an ambush set by the bandits. A fierce gun battle ensued, with the police countering the ambush with superior firepower, ultimately subduing the criminals. The gunfight resulted in the neutralization of 12 bandits, with others fleeing the scene, likely wounded.
Items recovered from the bandits included three AK-47 rifles, six rounds of live ammunition, camouflage uniforms, and assorted charms. Unfortunately, Insp. Anyiatse sustained a gunshot wound during the exchange and was later confirmed dead by a doctor. His body has been taken to the morgue.
The Commissioner of Police expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the fallen officer and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul. He also praised the bravery of the police team involved in the operation.
