Oyedele Denies Claims Tax Reform Committee Failed to Consult Governors

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has dismissed allegations that the committee failed to adequately engage with state governors in its consultations. Oyedele clarified that the committee made repeated efforts to meet with the governors but faced scheduling challenges on their end.

In a detailed statement addressing the claims, Oyedele explained that the committee sought an audience with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) on four occasions, but the meetings were canceled each time by the forum. Despite these setbacks, Oyedele emphasized that the committee has remained committed to inclusive engagement, holding consultations with representatives of subnational governments, including state commissioners of finance, accountants-general, chairpersons of internal revenue services, and the Joint Tax Board.

“The committee had originally planned to meet with governors at the start of the engagement process. Unfortunately, the Governors’ Forum canceled the meeting four times. It is therefore incorrect to say that we did not consult with them,” Oyedele stated.

The tax reform committee has conducted a series of consultations across various sectors since its inauguration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in August 2023. It has engaged with private-sector players, labor unions, civil society organizations, and international development partners, among others. Oyedele also noted that the committee has visited states to gather firsthand insights and feedback on its reform proposals.

Responding to concerns about the implementation of the committee’s recommendations, Oyedele assured that no policies would be imposed on states or other stakeholders without thorough consultations. He reiterated the committee’s collaborative approach to ensure the reforms are effective, inclusive, and aligned with the interests of all tiers of government.

“We recognize the critical role of subnational governments in fiscal reforms, and we remain open to further engagement with the governors at their convenience,” Oyedele added.

The Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms was established to address Nigeria’s fiscal challenges, including streamlining the tax system and improving revenue generation. As the committee continues its work, Oyedele reaffirmed its commitment to engaging all relevant stakeholders in shaping sustainable and impactful fiscal policies for the nation.
