After nearly three years of legal disputes and public controversy, a new Alaafin of Oyo has been officially appointed by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. The announcement was made on Friday through a statement from the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.
The new monarch, Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has been selected following extensive consultations and divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the traditional council of the Oyo Kingdom. His appointment was confirmed by Governor Makinde after careful consideration.
This marks a significant resolution to the turmoil that has followed the passing of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, who died on April 22, 2022. According to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, the appointment of Prince Owoade brings an end to the ongoing socio-political disputes that have gripped the region in the aftermath of the late monarch’s death.
Hon. Ojo has urged the people of Oyo State to embrace the announcement and support the new Alaafin. He expressed hope that the new monarch’s reign will usher in a period of peace, prosperity, and unity for the Oyo Kingdom, urging citizens to celebrate the new era.
This decision marks the resolution of a long-standing leadership vacuum, and the state looks forward to the future under the guidance of the newly appointed Alaafin.
