Oyo Tops Employment-friendly Southern States In NBS Rating

Oyo State has been recognized as the most employment-friendly state in southern Nigeria, according to a recent report by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The state recorded an impressive unemployment rate of just 2.0%, significantly outperforming 31 other states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which reported an unemployment rate of 14.1% as of September 26, 2024. This achievement was announced by Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, in a statement released on Monday in Ibadan.

Oyelade emphasized that the decline in unemployment figures aligns with Oyo State’s ongoing commitment to job creation. He noted that this commitment has been reflected in various employment initiatives, including recent announcements from the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) about the hiring of 7,000 new staff. Additionally, the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) revealed the recruitment of 7,500 teachers and 3,000 non-teaching staff. These efforts build on Governor Seyi Makinde’s earlier term, during which 5,000 teachers were employed.

The state government is also making strides in the healthcare sector, having recently completed the hiring process for 375 new personnel for the state’s hospital management board. These recruits will fill essential roles, including medical doctors, nurses, specialist consultants, hospital administrators, pharmacists, and various junior positions.

In a broader move to enhance public service, the Oyo State Civil Service Commission is currently in the process of employing 791 new staff. Furthermore, the Makinde administration has taken significant steps to promote workforce stability by pardoning, reinstating, and promoting 1,800 workers.

Commissioner Oyelade highlighted that Governor Makinde’s administration has not only maintained but also improved upon the employment initiatives established during his first term, demonstrating a strong focus on welfare and job creation within the state. This commitment to enhancing employment opportunities contributes to Oyo State’s reputation as a leader in employment creation in Nigeria.
