Residents of Moriki town in the Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State are experiencing intense fear as the deadline approaches for a ₦30 million levy imposed by the notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji. The deadline for payment expires Wednesday.
Turji, who appeared in a viral video, imposed this levy after the military killed over 100 of his cattle a few weeks ago. Initially demanding ₦50 million, he later reduced the amount to ₦30 million.
Local resident Abdullahi Moriki told newsmen that the community has been scrambling to gather the funds. Each household is being asked to contribute ₦10,000, while unmarried individuals are required to pay ₦2,000 each.
Moriki expressed concern over the situation, noting that despite the bandit leader’s reduction of the amount from ₦50 million to ₦30 million, the financial burden remains heavy. “I own a house in Moriki, and I’ve been instructed to pay ₦10,000,” he said.
When asked if the security agencies are aware of the situation and the threat of violence if the levy is not paid, Moriki confirmed that they are informed. Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Dalijan, verified the situation and added that joint security forces, including the Nigerian Police and the Army, have been deployed to the area to ensure adequate protection.
